KArtsCon2024: Sophie Jongman – Exhibiting Artist

Sophie Jongman is a local artist painting mainly in acrylics. Born of a Dutch father, raised and settled now in Medway, Kent. Currently resident artist at Nucleus arts in Chatham.

Sophie’s work is characterized by her use of bright, vibrant colours and her focus on depicting the natural world in her paintings often in semi abstract and impressionist style. Her work captures the essence of moments in time and the qualities of light and atmosphere. Sophie strives to bring a sense of peace, joy and wonder to her viewers through her artwork.

Sophie finds that painting provides an escape from the stresses of everyday life, allowing her to become fully immersed in the creative process.  Her skills have been honed over the years through ongoing learning and experimentation with different techniques.

As a resident artist at Nucleus Arts, Sophie enjoys sharing her passion for art and notes that people gain a sense of achievement and relaxation from creative pursuits; that art can bring communities together through shared experiences.

Sophie hopes to continue developing her skills as an artist and sharing her work with more people through exhibitions and online platforms. She aims to inspire others with her paintings and to spread a bit more beauty and joy into the world through her artwork.

“As an artist, I believe art should be accessible to everyone regardless of background or income. All people deserve the opportunity to experience and create art. It enriches our lives and opens our minds to new perspectives. I aim to share my passion for art through collaborating with fellow artists. Together we can inspire each other and build something meaningful.

Art has the power to bring people together and foster understanding across differences. When we see, create and discuss art together, we gain insight into the human condition that transcends the boundaries that sometimes separate us. Through art we can develop empathy, compassion and gratitude for life’s beauty in all its complexity.

I appreciate the opportunities I have to learn from others and hope to pay it forward by sharing my knowledge with others. There is so much joy and wonder to be found in the creative process and the finished pieces that result from it. I aim to spread that joy by sharing my own work and support others in sharing theirs.

Though I am still an emerging artist, I am motivated by a desire to use art as a vehicle for positive change in my community. I hope to continue learning, practicing my craft and nurturing a culture of creativity and mutual learning here in Medway.
