Presentation: Looking for Great Artists (and why we might miss them)
A consideration of the current curriculum expectations for Art and Design for schools in England and the ways these are interpreted by teachers. By considering these factors, an analysis of ‘great artists’ (based on Hodge, 2010) and linking to the work of Dewey (1934, UNESCO, 1953) and the development of ‘child art’ by Cizek (eg Anderson, 1969, Malvern, 1995, Hubin and Schneider 2019 etc) the author discussed whether the truly great artists are now in danger of being unrecognised in our classrooms.
