Anne Baldwin is based on St Mary’s Island. I’m 56 years old and learnt to draw in 2020 after injuries sustained in a car accident in 2015 I was forced to take early retirement from the Police Force. Due to lockdown and my situation of not knowing what to do with myself I became very withdrawn and my mental well-being suffered greatly, I tried writing poetry at first and created a Facebook account whereby I would post daily poems, it helped for a while then the words stopped coming I started doodling and found this focused my mind, I then scoured YouTube for tutorials to teach me to draw I was fascinated with pastels and focused on those although I’ve since tried colour pencils and charcoal and graphite. Now I try to practice something every day especially if I’m feeling low it really helps.
Unexpected Art
“Basic Instinct”, A1, pastel
This is a framed illusion painting showing the basic instinct of human nature over that of the bears, showing the need to love and be loved. We don’t need money and power.
“lizard Unfinished“, A4, colour pencil
This is a little A4 framed colour pencil showing the lizard trying to escape the page. As I draw him, he comes more and more to life.
“Protector or Predator“, A2 pastel.
“Protector or Predatator” is Pinkie protecting the mice by camouflaging them in the sweets and keeping them safe from danger? Or is she the danger to them.? It’s entirely subjective – no answer is wrong, it’s what the viewer sees.
“Stunning Symmetry”
Iwas struck by the unexpected beauty of seashells, the symmetry and natural patterns – a wonderful sight to behold. Not wishing to detract from that, I used charcoal in this A4 pieceof art.
